Special Ops 2 Review and Rating

The second season of Special Ops is an open fight between Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon) and his new nemesis Tahir Raj Bhasin. While the first season focused on a 19-year hunt for a terror mastermind, season 2 shifts dramatically — this time, the battleground is Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Plot Summary

  • The season begins with the kidnapping of a renowned scientist by a mysterious villain (Bhasin), who uses AI to access top-level government systems.
  • His ultimate goal: to hijack the Indian UPI command and control network.
  • Himmat Singh’s mission is to stop a devastating cyberattack before it cripples the nation.

What Works

1. Kay Kay Menon’s Comeback

Kay Kay Menon returns as the ever-brilliant Himmat Singh. With his trademark wit and understated power, he brings depth to every scene.

2. Tahir Raj Bhasin Steals the Show

Bhasin is magnetic as the villain — a brilliant, ruthless, and disturbingly calm mastermind. His performance is layered and unpredictable, making him the most watchable character this season.

3. Supporting Cast Strength

  • Tota Roy Chowdhury as Vinod Shekhawat adds a strong subplot.
  • Karan Tacker and Muzammil Ibrahim return in limited roles but make the most of their screen time.
  • Saiyami Kher reprises her role but is given very little to work with, a shortcoming in the writing.

4. Direction and Theme

Neeraj Pandey ditches romance and heist tropes to focus back on #espionage, #geopolitics, and #nationalsecurity — his core strengths.

What’s Missing

1. Slow Start

Unlike the fast-paced first season, season 2 begins lazily and struggles to find momentum early on.

2. Overstuffed Plot

Himmat Singh is entangled in multiple investigations, causing narrative clutter. Too many subplots dilute the central storyline and can confuse the audience.

3. Weak Action Sequences

While the action is well-staged, it lacks flow and natural impact. The cinematography in these scenes feels off, distracting from the emotional gravity of the story.

4. Underwritten Female Roles

Despite the return of some female characters, the lack of meaningful screen time or development makes Pandey’s world appear male-dominated and outdated.

Final Thoughts

Despite its flaws, Special Ops 2: Standoff delivers a compelling espionage thriller bolstered by powerful lead performances. While the plot could’ve been tighter and the action sharper, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Kay Kay Menon’s gripping face-off is reason enough to tune in.
