Review
Return to the Franchise
Nearly three decades after the 1997 scare-fest, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is back — with a vengeance.
Director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (along with Sam Lansky and Leah McKendrick) sticks closely to the original formula:
- Sealed-envelope dread
- Fish-hook kills
- Seaside suspense
It’s a blood-soaked nostalgia trip for original fans and a predictable but satisfying slasher romp for newcomers.
Visuals & Pacing
Visually, the film excels:
- Southport’s boardwalks, plush (if shadowy) villas, and teeming beaches are beautifully shot by Elisha Christian
- The cinematography amplifies the lurking dread — cranked to 11
- Pacing: Slow-burn to sudden chaos, with horror sequences hitting back-to-back
- The final flurry offers a genuinely chilling payoff
But some might find the motive — a quest for vengeance over an accidental death rather than premeditated murder — a stretch.
Performances
The cast adds strong support to the gore:
- Madelyn Cline (Danica) surprises with a confident, layered performance: “Vain enough to think about my skin care routine even when someone I’m close to is killed in a brutal fashion.”
- Chase Sui Wonders and Jonah Hauer-King are effective as guilt-ridden Ava and Milo
- Tyriq Withers is perfectly cast as impulsive Teddy Spencer
Attempts to pull in original stars Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) feel like forced fan service — charming but underdeveloped.
💉 Slasher Elements & Sound
- The fish-hook kills are bloodier than ever
- Jump-scares come sharp and frequent
- The backstory and motive lack originality
- Chanda Dancy’s background score adds tension effectively
Verdict
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” doesn’t reinvent the slasher genre — but it doesn’t need to. It delivers:
- Relentless thrills
- A gush of blood and guts
- And a heavy helping of nostalgia
For fans of the original novel or movie, and slasher enthusiasts alike, this fish-hook resurrection is a welcomed return to Southport’s haunted shores.
